The series begins right after the events of the terrorist “Break the World” operation in Gundam SEED Destiny. As terror reigns in the affected areas, Deep Space Survey and Development Organization (DSSD) members Selene McGriff, Sol Ryuune Lange and Edmond du Clos are attempting to bring an experimental space exploration use mobile suit to space from a heavily affected area. However, a GINN Insurgent suddenly begins to attack the crippled city they’re in, and the situation quickly goes from bad to worse. Edmond decides to stay to fight the GINN with some fellow ex-comrades of his in the Earth Alliance, giving Selene and Sol enough time to launch in their shuttle. Edmond is killed as he destroys the GINN, living just long enough to see the shuttle launch. Meanwhile the Earth Alliance’s 81st Autonomous Mobile Group, better known as Phantom Pain, are sent to the defense of an Earth Alliance base under attack by ZAFT insurgents loyal to former PLANT Supreme Council leader Patrick Zala.

The series is a fantastic complement to the already good Gundam Seed Destiny series, showing, for the first time, the effect of the Break the World incident on the Earth, the ruthlessness of Phantom Pain and of course, the mindless training of an anti-coordinator soldier. The storyline has a bit too many holes in it at the end, but that’s about the only fault I could find. So if you have the time, it wouldn’t be bad to sit down and watch this series through.

Biography:
Mudie Holcroft is a Natural pilot who is on a special three man mobile suit team with Shams Couza and Sven Cal Bayan. Together the three of them work for the Phantom Pain and Mudie's specific rank is 2nd Lieutenant. Mudie was orphaned at a very young age and like her fellow teammates she ended up going through anti-Coordinator warfare training at an institution for children.

As the only female member of the team she pilots the GAT-X1022 Blu Duel and specializes in close combat. After the Junius Seven incident Mudie and the rest of the team are given the opportunity to play a major role in the second war. In Stage 2 the team is sent out on the cold northern plain of Russia to stop an attack on a carrier holding the Destroy Gundam. In the process of protecting the Earth Alliance's newest weapon Mudie's Blu Duel takes damage and is eventually torn apart by a trio of Cerberus BuCUE Hound. Before her teammates could help out Mudie is already dead.

Biography:
Shams Couza is a Natural pilot who is on a special three man mobile suit team with Mudie Holcroft and Sven Cal Bayan. As a Lieutenant Junior Grade Shams and the rest of his teammates work for the Phantom Pain. When he was a young child Shams went through anti-Coordinator warfare training at an institution for children so this was something he had in common with the fellow teammates. An interesting note about Shams is even though his eyesight is fine he chooses to wear eye glasses for show.

Shams pilots the GAT-X103AP Verde Buster which is a long-range artillery mobile suit but he is also an all rounded fighter who can handle close combat. When the second war begins Shams uses the Verde Buster to do what he can to help assure the Earth Alliance's victory. In Stage 2 when the three man team helps protect the carrier containing the Destroy Gundam from a ZAFT attack Shams is angered over the death of one of his teammates, Mudie Holcroft.

In Stage 3 Shams and Sven take part in an Phantom Pain attack on the DSSD space station in hopes of capturing the Stargazer Gundam. Shams anger over Mudie's death appears to carry over in this battle because he quickly uses up Verde Buster's power. With no power to attack or defend Shams is a sitting duck that ends up being killed when some DSSD Astrays destroy the Verde Buster.

Biography:
Edmund du Clos is a former Earth Alliance officer who served as a tank platoon commander with the formal rank of lieutenant commander. When the first war ended in C.E. 71 Edmund retired from that position and was then appointed as the security sub manager in the DSSD's Technology Development Center on the outskirts of Fortaleza, South America. During the first war Edmund's older sister was killed so his only relative left was his then 14 year old nephew, Sol Ryuune L'ange. With Sol's mother dead Edmund became the teenagers guardian.

In Stage 1 Edmund and Selene McGriff are on Earth after the Junius Seven event. With the ongoing chaos and destruction going on due to flooding they are forced to find refuge in a large building where Earth Alliance forces have already taken up position. Suddenly a GINN Insurgent Type begins to attack everything around which forces Edmund and Selene to secure a single inflatable boat so that Selene can ride to the DSSD launch site.

As Selene heads to the site Edmund stays behind and boards a tank that ends up battling the GINN. Edmund is able to successfully bring the GINN down but the tank he is in takes a massive amount of damage due to one last effort by the GINN's pilots. From the wreckage of the tank Edmund sees Selene's shuttle take off and is able to muster up a smile before dying from his injuries.

Biography:
Sol Ryuune L'ange is a 1st generation Coordinator who lost his DSSD staff member parents in an accident in space two years before the events of this series took place. After being orphaned he went on to live with his uncle Edmund du Clos, who became Sol's guardian. With his parents dead Sol wanted to walk the same path as them by working for the DSSD and eventually become GSX-401FW Stargazer's test pilot for the sake of space exploration and development.

In Stage 2 it is shown that Sol's dream of becoming Stargazer's test pilot has indeed come true. In fact Sol even had a hand in giving Stargazer its name as during the propulsion system test he calls the 401 Gundam a "Stargazer" after remembering some words from his late uncle. At the end of Stage 3 Sol is the one who locates Sven and Selene after they have been in the Stargazer Gundam for over 27 days but like everyone else he is unsure of their status after they fail to respond to him.

Biography:
Selene McGriff is a 28 year old female Coordinator who is on the DSSD engineering staff that is developing the GSX-401FW Stargazer. Like many of the DSSD staff she was born and raised in space because her parents were also members of the organization. Selene is a bright individual who isn't happy until her goal at the time is achieved. This kind of attitude at times makes her rather aggressive with her methods as she puts great effort into what she is doing. Selene's guiding principle consist of the words "Mankind must set out to space."

In Stage 1 Selene is on Earth with Edmund du Clos after the Junius Seven incident. On their route to the DSSD launch site the two are forced to find refuge in a large building occupied by Earth Alliance soldiers because of flooding in the area. Selene and Edmund were not safe for too long because a GINN Insurgent Type began to attack everything around, forcing the two to flee again. Eventually Edmund and Selene are able to secure a single inflatable boat in which Selene takes to the DSSD launch site. At the end of Stage 1 Selene safety gets to the launch site and is shown launching into space.

In Stage 2 Selene arrives at the DSSD space station where she meets up with Sol Ryuune L'ange and the rest of the staff that are working on the DSSD's current project. At the end of Stage 2 Sol and Selene are shown performing a propulsion system test on the 401 Gundam and after Sol calls it a "Stargazer" Selene types that name into the system thus giving the Gundam its name.

When the Stargazer Gundam becomes a target of the Phantom Pain in Stage 3 the DSSD space station is attacked. During this attack Selene uses the Stargazer Gundam's unique abilities to destroy some of the attacking forces before eventually running into Sven Cal Bayan in the GAT-X105E Strike Noir. Selene is able to disable Sven's Strike Noir Gundam before ordering the DSSD to fire the propulsion beam. The firing of this beam resulted in the Strike Noir and Stargazer being sent out into space.

Once she salvaged energy from the Strike Noir Selene brought Sven aboard the Stargazer and set a course for Earth using the Stargazer's solar sails. She also gave Sven and herself a drug to knock them both out for 27 days to conserve their remaining energy. A little over 27 days later Sol finds the Stargazer Gundam and tries to communicate with them. The status of Selene and Sven are unknown after they fail to respond.

Biography:
Sven Cal Bayan is a Natural pilot who is one member of a three man Phantom Pain special forces team along Mudie Holcroft and Shams Couza. When Sven was a child he wanted to become an Astronomer but sadly his parents were killed in a terrorist bombing at a space museum so instead of living a normal life he was taken into the anti-coordinator training program run by the Earth Alliance. As Sven grew up and went through his training he gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and became the pilot of the GAT-X105E Strike Noir.

At the end of Stage 1 Sven and Shams are shown watching as the ruins of Junius Seven crash down onto Earth. They are then interrupted by Mudie who tells them that they are expected to be going into battle soon and with that the final scene shows Sven launching in his Gundam while Mudie and Shams have theirs airlifted. At the beginning of Stage 2 it is revealed that Sven's group was dispatched to assist an Earth Alliance base that was being assaulted by ZAFT terrorists.

Sven and his team are able to destroy the ZAFT terrorists thus saving the Earth Alliance base from being destroyed itself. Later on at a bar Sven, Shams and Mudie watch a video that was made by the three children that piloted the GINN Insurgent Type that attacked the Earth Alliance post back in Stage 1. When it was revealed that the Coordinator children lost their parents to Naturals Sven has a flashback to his own tragic experience as a child.

Not too long after that Sven and a unit of GAT-01A2R Slaughter Daggers are sent to eliminate a Coordinator refugee camp that is believed to be training terrorists. As the team reaches their target Sven is unable to distinguish civilians from terrorists so he coldly gives the order for the entire camp to be slaughtered. Later in the stage on the cold northern plains of Russia the Earth Alliance ground carrier transporting the Destroy Gundam is under attack so Sven, Shams and Mudie are sent out to help protect the Earth Alliance's newest weapon. During the battle Mudie was killed and while Shams was upset about it Sven shown completely no emotion about the incident at all.

At the end of Stage 2 onboard the carrier Shams informs Sven of their new orders to infiltrate the DSSD space station and steal the new mobile suit that is being produced there. After going into space Sven, Shams and other Phantom Pain forces attack the DSSD space station. As the battle went on Sven ran into the Stargazer Gundam that was being piloted by DSSD engineering staff member Selene McGriff. Sven is caught off guard by the Stargazer's abilities and is injured after his Strike Noir is disabled.

With the firing of the DSSD's propulsion beam both Stargazer and Strike Noir are sent out into space. In the tough situation Selene is able to salvage energy from the Strike Noir and bring Sven onboard the Stargazer. Once she set a course for Earth using the Stargazer's solar sails Selene gave both Sven and herself a drug to knock them out for 27 days so they could conserve their own energy. Over 27 days later Sol Ryuune L'ange located their position and tried to communicate with the two but neither Sven and Selene answered thus leaving their status up in the air.

A bit stupid on my part as I thought Rage of the Vortex covered the first episode for the episode summary when it was actually the synopsis. Anyways, my episode summary is sort of done in a MAHQ style as it is a bit long.

Episode 2 Summary.

Episode 2 opens up with the attack on the Earth base located in Kirgriz. Infiltrating their defenses, the Coordinators lay waste to any personnel they find, be that of officer or researcher. The battle seems to be lost as the Earth base is hopelessly outnumbered. That’s where the Phantom Pain comes in. Jumping into action, the Strike Noir piloted by Sven Cal Bayang as well the Verde Buster and Blu Duel, piloted by Shams Couza and Mudie Holcroft, save the day and destroy the mobile suits attacking the Earth base.

Enjoying a small break between battles, the trio, along with a host of Earth Alliance personnel is gathered within a bar. Images of the Break the World incident flash on screen. During this moment in time, Sven Cal Bayang is lost in thought as he revisits his childhood memories. Showing a deep interest in space, young Sven has dreams of becoming an astronomer. While attending a party, Sven’s parents are killed in a terrorist attack. Orphaned, Sven becomes Earth Alliance property.

Jumping back to present time, Phantom Pain is given a new mission. The mission is to take out a Coordinator refugee camp confirmed to be a terrorist training camp. Not knowing who may or may not be a terrorist, Phantom Pain takes out the entire camp without prejudice. During the mission, Sven flashes back again to his childhood. Subjected to a Blue Cosmos training camp, Sven went through intense brainwashing and combat training.

The setting now changes to the DSSD’s Troya Station as Selene McGriff has just arrived. Travelling throughout the station while visiting her fellow researchers, Selene makes a stop within the 401’s AI unit, a new mobile suit designed to travel the galaxy based on a solar propulsion unit called the Voiture Lumiere. Selene comments on the fact that the 401 unit is only able to perform with human inputs and commands, but, with time will be able to make its own decisions based on its past experiences.

Now in Europe, Phantom Pain protects the Alliance land carrier Bonaparte as it transports a Destroy unit. Though the battle is won, Mudie Holcroft is slain. Later on within the Bonaparte, Sven witnesses Stella Loussier as she passes by on a gurney. Accompanied by Shams Couza, Sven explains their new mission to steal the DSSD’s new mobile suit. Given permission to kill any personnel, Shams Couza relishes in that fact as he can now take revenge on the Coordinators for Mudie’s death.

Back in space, DSSD is in the middle of the testing phase for the 401 unit. Finding it rude to call the AI unit by its model number, Sol suggests that the new name for it should be Stargazer. Agreeing to this, Selene renames the 401 unit to “Stargazer”. Testing for the Stargazer’s propulsion system, the Voiture Lumiere is a success.
